UW Medicine's IT Services (ITS) organization is responsible for the centralized management of UW Medicine's computing assets. Within ITS, Technical Services and Operations (TSO) has responsibility for managing the hardware, systems software and major computing infrastructure used for hosting clinical and business computing used by its hospitals, clinics, enterprise departments and affiliates.
The Storage Engineer, as a part of a centralized architectural and engineering function, develops a technical strategy for persistently retaining data for UW Medicine applications. This is a large scale need as UW Medicine's data storage needs are signficant and the technology and performance that is demanded is of the highest level. This position works under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Enterprise Services to design a scalable, cost-effective, durable strategy comprised of current technical best practices. UW Medicine is a complex technical environment; as such; this position works with other specialists to create a supportable environment that performs to the needs of clinical and business applications: one that is responsive, capable of handling the petabytes of data storage needs and reliable. The Storage Engineer will provide the technical expertise and execution required to plan and integrate enterprise technical services used by enterprise (or larger departmental) applications.
This position constantly strives to understand the unique requirements that large, complex, impactful systems demand. high performing, efficient, scalable, and reliable infrastructure services in which to operate. This position also understands the relevant compliance requirements, industry trends, supportability costs and availability needs. It provides cost-effective solutions that will be well utilized. It proposes and evaluates standards as an important component of the governance of quality and compliance. It participates in capacity assessments and budgeting exercises to promote long-term viability of solutions. It also provides high level support to impactful incidents and valuable knowledge to those systems administrators who use, and help support, the services.
This position must provide optimal solutions for UW Medicine's computing environments where current, expert knowledge of technical solutions is required; applying a good understanding of organizational requirements so that solutions are usable and appropriate. It is critical that what is developed meets the needs of UW Medicine's major applications (and their vendors), is industry standard, is contuously operable (to the organization's continuity requirements), and is compliant with federal and industry regulations.
UW Medicine, by virtue of its amalgamated entities, has a very complex systems architecture. A thorough understanding of the major, applicable technologies is required. These technologies include computing virtualization, such as server and desktop virtualization; storage systems, such as storage devices, storage area networking, storage virtualization and other storage technologies; recovery approaches, such as common backup methodologies and replication strategies; and major systems applications, such as common operating systems, web delivery technologies, database systems and monitoring systems. This position must provide analysis of capacity and performance in order to design systems that will scale and still meet throughput and response time requirements. Applicable compliance and security requirements need to be met by any design so those systems which utilize the enterprise services are also compliant.
As a part of the TSO Enterprise Services team, this position needs to provide expert level knowledge to other TSO and departmental administrators and thus must have signficiant experience. Additionally, this position must understand the essential components of process design and management, lead efforts comprised of technical staff, be a demonstrated problem-solver, understand the basic components of project management and long-term planning and be able to communicate effectively with other technical staff, upper level management and vendors.
UW Medicine's operations, which include its mission, revenue, costs, quality of care, importance in the community and brand, are supported by and, in some cases, built on centralized IT systems and operations. In order to maintain quality, costs, compliance, security of data, and flexibility, a centralized set of solutions and services that are well-designed and scalable, must be built and supported by top level engineers and architects. Solutions cannot be designed independent of each other. Instead, a holistic, broad-based group comprised of technical experts, must be tasked with developing enterprise solutions with enterprise level requirements, while working with vendors, industry leaders, clinical staff and management. This position contributes to this end: a visible set of solutions upon which UW Medicine necessarily depends.
Advanced Technical Support (30%)
Provide high-level advice and support in response to serious IT incidents and service outages. Act as an expert resource for Systems Administrators and Analysts working on difficult technical issues.
Manage or lead complex technical infrastructure projects and systems implementations, which may involve multiple groups and their respective infrastructure.
Help coordinate oversight and management of large-scale, shared infrastructure resources among TSO teams.
Systems Design (30%)
Design and document large-scale, complex enterprise IT systems and solutions.
Create technical solutions that adequately anticipate and plan for rapid and large-scale growth in equipment and costs.
Generate detailed work estimates and plans as required for developing new systems, planning large technical projects, and replacing or adding to existing equipment within the data centers.
Business Continuity of Infrastructure (15%)
Develop and document system outage procedures for business continuity and disaster recovery purposes (BC/DR).
Analyze systems for reliability, and design new systems to maximize reliability, resilience and redundancy as needed.
Capacity Planning and Analysis (10%)
Develop or acquire tools and processes for gathering and compiling growth data.
Regularly review and evaluate data to provide growth analysis and planning, set realistic service expectations, and improve performance measuring and reporting.
Provide high-quality capacity reporting and analysis services to management for use in budgeting, purchasing and technology forecasting.
Participate in, and provide advice for, the annual budget development process and major equipment purchase planning.
Requirements Analysis (10%)
Consult and provide advice to end users, project managers, technical staff, managers, and others on large computing infrastructure projects.
Gather, document, and evaluate technical and business requirements for projects and technology products as needed.
Develop, maintain, and promote standardized enterprise IT solutions to meet complex technical requirements.
Help maintain and advance a robust standards lifecycle for key enterprise technologies.
Cost analysis (5%)
Develop models for understanding and assessing unit and systems costs, as spread over a complex and multi-tiered set of technology layers and components.
Provide budget estimates and forecasts for operational use, and for use by management.
Gather technology cost data, analyze data based on cost models, and identify approximate costs for proposed projects and purchases.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.
10+ years' progressively responsible experience in IT systems administration, including:
5+ years' experience acting as a Server System Administrator on either Microsoft Windows and/or Unix/Linux platforms.
3+ years' experience with server virtualization and hypervisors, preferably vSphere.
3+ years' experience in storage management, preferably on IBM and/or NetApp storage platforms.
Ideally, you'll also have: (desired skills and experience)
Demonstrated experience and ability to write scripts, using common scripting tools such as PowerShell, Perl, Bash, KornShell, Python, etc.
Demonstrated experience and ability in project management and technical group leadership.
Demonstrated experience and ability with preparing technical documentation, using common tools such as Microsoft Office, Visio, etc.
Recent technical certifications and training in related technical disciplines (i.e. systems administration, storage management, server virtualization, etc.)
Experience and ability in database administration (i.e. SQL Server, Oracle, etc.)

UW Medicine, its clinical facilities and its IT resources are located throughout sites in the Seattle metropolitan area. Because of this, the position requires access to personal transportation. Travel to/from includes, but is not limited to, facilities which are affiliated with UW Medicine (examples include Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center).
The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. However, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and to support implementation and maintenance activities.
This individual is also expected to be available for call on a 24x7 basis as needed.
